What is a technique to help me hand relief chisel cut through the soft wood grain?

cut into small relief carving pine wood blocks. Chiseling approximately 2 inches square which is approximately 3 / 16''de depth in soft pine blocks. The purpose is to provide a break for the assembly of finished square legs these small blocks which were then used to provide a solid set for the seat of small stools. I have completed a stool, but the carving was very slow and tedious, especially having to cross chisel grain pine. I just ruined a block and had to cut another. However, Best technique I feel maybe I could help. Can anyone give me some good tips for hand-carved softwood, mostly having to cut of the Cross grain.

I would be doing with a router and a template. Then you would simply chisel the corners to be square. If you go to chisel grinding, it takes a very, very sharp chisel. How often has sharpened your own? If you're using one of the hardware, without sharpness, you're probably not an advantage very good on the chisel.
